Specialist Degree Programs

NIU invites you to elevate your expertise and advance your career through our specialist degree programs. Tailored for those seeking advanced knowledge in specialized fields, our programs provide a unique pathway to professional distinction.

The specialist degree is a unique and advanced path that offers a specialized focus for those seeking heightened expertise in specific professional fields. The specialist degree is designed for individuals who aspire to deepen their knowledge and skills in a specific professional domain. Unlike a master's degree, which provides a broader understanding of a subject, the specialist degree hones in on a particular area of expertise. Typically extending beyond a master's program but shorter than a doctoral program, the specialist degree generally spans one to two years of advanced study. The curriculum is meticulously crafted to provide an expedited yet comprehensive exploration of the chosen field.

Long recognized for excellence, our specialist degree in educational administration was the first to meet new standards set by the Illinois General Assembly. Our graduates are visionary leaders in education, applying research-informed knowledge and skills to foster continuous improvement in the academic environments they manage.

Our specialist degree in school psychology integrates basic and applied aspects of psychology. You'll gain an understanding of the theoretical content of your area, as well as the research skills needed to become a competent and creative investigator.
