Certificates of Graduate Study

NIU offers a variety of certificates of graduate study – also known as graduate certificates - in addition to our traditional graduate degrees. Whether you're looking to enhance your professional skills, pivot your career, or delve into a specialized field, our graduate certificates provide a focused and accelerated pathway to success.

A course of study leading to a graduate certificate shall consist of at least 12 semester hours, and normally not more than 18 semester hours, of specified course work. Graduate certificates have fewer admission requirements, have an easier application process, and can be completed in 1-2 years, depending on the program.

A graduate certificate is a strategic investment in your professional growth and expertise. Whether you're aiming for career advancement, skill enhancement, or a career pivot, a graduate certificate empowers you with targeted knowledge and credentials to thrive in your chosen field.

Benefits include:

  • Specialized skill enhancement
  • Accelerated learning
  • Career advancement
  • Flexibility and convenience
  • Industry relevance

Note, not all certificates of graduate study are offered as stand-alone options. Many certificates of graduate study require admission as a degree-seeking student to be completed while concurrently enrolled in a degree program.
