NIU Research and Innovation Resources and Facilities

Our partners in research and innovation can tap into the extensive resources of NIU to support their own R&D and entrepreneurship.

Interested in partnering with NIU? We can help assemble a team of some of the best minds at the university to help your organization in many ways, including startup assistance, identifying research partners, student interns, workforce development, facility usage or R&D opportunities. Learn more by visiting the Office of Innovation website, or start the conversation by contacting Karinne Bredberg at innovation@niu.edu.

Umbrella Resources for Potential Partners

Our Division of Research and Innovation Partnerships encourages research, scholarship, artistry and entrepreneurship through numerous efforts, including seeking external connections to accelerate the creation, integration and application of new knowledge. Additionally, our Division of Outreach, Engagement and Regional Development collaborates with community partners to address societal challenges and maximize opportunities. And our Center for Governmental Studies can provide a fresh look at your organization to help you weather a time of change, survey research to guide your next steps, or training programs to prepare the next generation of leaders.

Partners can potentially find space on campus, to be immersed in our community. For example, as an incubator, co-working facility and meeting venue, the 71 North Partnership Studio allows industry partners, students, faculty and community members to explore collaborative innovation together. Located in the heart of campus, the studio features open floor plans, breakout rooms and state-of-the-art audio-visual technologies for virtual, in-person or hybrid collaborations.  Our $23 million Northern Illinois Center for Community Sustainability will be constructed on our west campus, and also will have space for external tenants.

Other umbrella facilities that might be of interest to our partners, especially those conducting data-intensive research, include our university’s Center for Research Computing and Data. It boasts a high-performance computer cluster, capable of tens of trillions of calculations per second, and is currently used in such areas as climate modeling, accelerator applications and physical chemistry.

Additionally, our NIU colleges host a large number of impressive education and research laboratories and facilities. Some highlights are listed below.
