Submitting the Electronic Thesis/Dissertation (ETD)

You will submit your ETD through ProQuest, but your ETD will remain in the custody of the NIU Thesis Office throughout the review process and up to the final approval of your thesis or dissertation. Once approved, our staff will release your ETD to ProQuest.

Preparing Your File

Prepare your ETD as a single document file, including the abstract and appendices.

Do not include media files, large raw data files, etc. You will submit them as supplemental files.

Embed all fonts into your document.

Convert your ETD file into a PDF.

Preparing Additional Material

Check that you have the correct spellings of your director’s and committee members’ names.

Create a short list of keywords and subject categories to identify and index your work.

Have your abstract ready to copy and paste when prompted.

Creating and Activating Your Account

Visit the ProQuest ETD Administrator website.

Click on Submit my dissertation/thesis located in the Ready to begin? box.

Create and activate your ProQuest account.

Submitting Your File

All theses and dissertations must be made public (i.e., published), except in a couple of extremely rare circumstances as determined by the Thesis Office. When submitting your file, you will need to choose your publishing option, date of release (embargo) and the details about your ETD. ProQuest provides details about each publishing and embargo option (PDF) to help you decide which one best fits your circumstances. You may also want to ask your faculty director for advice.

Choose your publishing option. (Note that all NIU theses and dissertations are always freely accessible in full text to the NIU community via Huskie Commons.)

 Choose your date of release.

Read and accept the publishing agreement.

Read and accept the deposit of your thesis or dissertation into the Huskie Commons (NIU’s institutional repository).

 Enter your contact information.

Enter the details of your work.

Upload the PDF of your thesis or dissertation.

 Upload any supplemental files (optional).

Enter a message to the NIU thesis office staff (optional).

Register your copyright with the Library of Congress (optional).

 Order bound copies (optional).

Provide payment - This transaction (if any products or services have been purchased) will be processed immediately, but the ETD itself will not be sent to ProQuest until several weeks after the graduation date. It may take several months for bound copies to ship.

Submit your thesis or dissertation – You have successfully submitted your ETD for review to the NIU Thesis Office. You’ll receive confirmation via email and the status of your submission will read “Ready for Checklist.” ETDs are read in the order they were received.
